Medical Advisory Board

The Ocular Science medical advisory board (MAB) is comprised of 30 of the leading minds in ophthalmology and optometry. This diverse and talented group of key opinion leaders helps us chart a strategic course. The MAB gives voice to the rapidly expanding network of physicians and patients who use our products and serves as a conduit for emerging research and medical innovations. The board is led by Damien Goldberg, MD, co-founder and chief medical officer of Ocular Science; and Francis Mah, MD, Ocular Science co-founder and chief medical advisory board member.

Damien Goldberg, MD, MBA

Ocular Science Chief Medical Officer
Wolstan & Goldberg Eye Associates  /  Torrance, CA

Dr. Damien Goldberg is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in advanced corneal, cataract and refractive surgery. He received his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and his Master of Business Administration from Georgetown’s Robert Emmett McDonough School of Business. He did his residency in ophthalmology at the Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center Program and sub-specialized in cornea and refractive surgery during a fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas.

Dr. Goldberg currently is a managing partner at Wolstan and Goldberg Eye Associates, a multispecialty practice in Torrance, Calif. He is also a clinical instructor at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA and is the Chief of the Ophthalmology Service at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, an affiliate of the Cedar Sinai Medical Center.  And to help those in need, Dr Goldberg also participates as a provider to EyeCare America, a national program that provides free eye care to the underserved.

Dr. Goldberg has an extensive background in research and has been a principle investigator in over 65 FDA clinical trials for new medical devices and medications. He also currently sits on the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) FDA committee.

Dr. Goldberg has published many articles and book chapters on his research and has delivered presentations at multiple conferences worldwide. He served as the medical editor of the digital journal Millennial Eye from 2013-2014 and has been a reviewer and editorial board member for several ophthalmic journals. 

In 2014, Dr. Goldberg was honored as one of America’s Super Doctors, and two years later, he received the Castle Connolly Top Doctor Award as one of the OSN Premier Surgeon 300 Innovators in Refractive Cataract Surgery. As a result of his innovative expertise, Dr. Goldberg has consulted for a variety of companies and manufacturers, specifically pertaining to the development of new medications and device technologies.

Dr. Goldberg is pleased to have returned to the Los Angeles area to help care for the local community where he grew up. His wife, three boys and he enjoy the active lifestyle that Southern California provides, including water sports, skiing and traveling, as well as reading and spending time with family.

Francis Mah, MD

Ocular Science Chief Medical Advisory Board Member
Scripps Health  /  San Diego, CA

Dr. Francis Mah is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in advanced corneal, cataract and refractive surgery. Dr. Mah received his Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College and his MD from Medical College of Ohio at Toledo, where he was a elected into the prestigious AOA Honor Medical Society as a junior. He did his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was elected chief resident and completed his fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery.

Dr. Mah is the Director of Cornea and External Disease and the Co-Director, Refractive Surgery at Scripps Clinic Medical Group in La Jolla, Calif. He was most recently an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and in the Department of Pathology, as well as the Medical Director of the Charles T. Campbell Ophthalmic Microbiology Laboratory, at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. 

Dr. Mah has an extensive background in research and has been an investigator and principle investigator for many clinical trails and investigator studies. He has published more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters on his research and has delivered presentations in more than 25 countries on six continents. Dr. Mah is a reviewer and is also on the editorial board for several opthalmic journals. 

Dr. Mah is currently the Chair of the Corneal Clinical Committee, a committee member on the FDA Committee of the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Co-Chair of the Preferred Practice Patterns for Cornea and External Disease for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Kenneth Beckman, MD

Comprehensive Eyecare of Central Ohio  /  Westerville, OH

Dr. Kenneth Beckman is Director of Corneal Surgery at Comprehensive Eyecare of Central Ohio and a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at Ohio State University. He completed a fellowship in corneal and anterior segment surgery at Tulane University. Dr. Beckman specializes in cataract surgery and corneal transplant surgery, including the new sutureless corneal transplant technique, DSEK. Dr. Beckman is also involved in research for treatment of chronic dry eye and speaks throughout the region on ocular surface disorder. He is involved in an FDA trial for the treatment of keratoconus with corneal collagen cross-linking. His practice is the only one in Ohio taking part in this study. He is past president and treasurer of the Columbus Ophthalmology and ENT Society. He is also a past board member of Prevent Blindness Ohio.

Alan Berg, MD

Berg Feinfield Vision Correction  /  Los Angeles, CA

Dr. Alan Berg, a specialist in laser vision correction and refractive lens implant surgery, has been a pioneer in refractive surgery- beginning with Radial Keratotomy nearly three decades ago – and is one of only 50 U.S. surgeons to be involved with clinical trials of the Implantable Collamer Lens. Berg-Feinfeld Vision Correction, founded in 1980, today has four offices in the LA area, which use only state-of-the-art technology, including the VISX Star. 

Dr. Berg earned his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University and spent his residency in ophthalmology at USC, where he currently is a clinical instructor for residents in training. He is a medical staff member and former chief of ophthalmology at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, the former chief of ophthalmology at City of Hope and the medical director of the Kobe Laser Center in Tokyo and Kobe.  He has performed thousands of cataract intraocular lens surgeries and utilizes advanced IOL technology, including Multifocal/Accommodating Implants for presbyopia.

Dr. Berg, an expert reviewer for the California Medical Board who has lectured on laser vision correction across the country,  was recently named one of the top five percent LASIK surgeons in the U.S. by the VISX Laser company, was selected one of the “Best Doctors in America” in 2005-06 and has been named “Best LASIK Surgeon” in LA on numerous occasions. 

When he is not working, Dr. Berg enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.

Nicole Fram, MD

Dr. Nicole Fram is a board‐certified ophthalmologist with an expertise in refractive and complex cataract surgery, anterior segment reconstruction and corneal transplantation. She is the managing partner at Advanced Vision Care in Los Angeles, a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at the Stein Eye Institute, UCLA and serves as an attending surgeon for residents and fellow at the West Los Angeles Veteran’s Hospital.

Dr. Fram received her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Society. She completed her residency at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, serving as Chief Resident, and then completed a fellowship in Cornea, Refractive and External Disease at the University of California, San Francisco Francis I. Proctor Foundation.

Dr. Fram has authored several journal publications and book chapters. She enjoys contributing to the field of ophthalmology and is the chair of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Cataract Committee. As an active member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, she is a member of their Cataract Committee and sub‐committee on Challenging and Complicated Cataract Surgery and serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Fram lectures nationally and internationally and enjoys teaching innovative surgical techniques to colleagues, residents and fellows.

Joseph Gira, MD

Dr. Joseph Gira is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine receiving his Doctorate Degree with Distinction. His transitional internship was at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. Dr. Gira completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center, Hermann Eye Center. He has been in private practice in St. Louis since 1999. He is licensed to practice in Missouri and Illinois. 

Dr. Gira is Board-Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has presented numerous papers at various ophthalmology conferences, has published research papers and is an accomplished speaker. 

As one of the leading innovators in the refractive cataract surgery field, Dr. Gira also carries the honor of being a Premier Surgeon 300 member. These Premier Surgeons were hand chosen by the editors and publishers of Ocular Surgery News, a prestigious Ophthalmology media source, because of the influence and innovation they have contributed to the industry. Dr. Gira was chosen for this distinct honor by continuously working to educate and share his knowledge and techniques with his colleagues and the rest of the refractive cataract surgery feild. 

Dr. Gira is married with two children and lives in the St. Louis area.

Jacqueline Griffiths, MD

Preeya K. Gupta, MD

Duke Health  /  Durham, NC

Dr. Preeya K. Gupta is Clinical Medical Director of Duke Eye Center at Page Road and an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Duke University Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina. 

Dr. Gupta earned her medical degree at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago and graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. She fulfilled her residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Eye Center, where she earned the K. Alexander Dastgheib Surgical Excellence Award, and then completed a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants in Minneapolis. 

Dr. Gupta has authored many articles in peer-reviewed literature and serves as an invited reviewer to journals such as Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Journal of Refractive Surgery. She has written several book chapters about corneal disease and ophthalmic surgery, as well as served as an editor of the well-known series Curbside Consultation in Cataract Surgery. She also holds several editorial board positions including the ONE Network of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, International Society of Refractive Surgery Multimedia Board and BCSC Refractive Surgery Committee Board. 

Dr. Gupta serves as an elected member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Cornea clinical committee and is president of the Vanguard Ophthalmology Society. She has given presentations nationally and internationally, including invited lectures, national meeting presentations and education of residents and fellows. Dr Gupta has been awarded the National Millennial Eye Outstanding Female in Ophthalmology Award and has received the AAO Achievement Award. She is also an elected American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Council member.

James Khodabakhsh, MD

Beverly Hills Institute of Ophthalmology  /  Beverly Hills, CA

Dr. James Khodabakhah, who specializes in complex surgeries of the eye, currently serves as the chief and chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center as well as medical director of the Beverly Hills Institute of Ophthalmology. 

His road to medicine began when he graduated with honors from New York University and received the prestigious Presidents Service Award, the highest undergraduate honor at the school. 

Dr. Khodabakhsh attended medical school at the State University of New York in Brooklyn and his internship year in general surgery was done at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in NYC. He then completed his residency and was the chief resident at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary at New York Medical College, followed by his fellowship anterior segment surgery at New York Medical College, where he joined the faculty and is presently a clinical assistant professor at ophthalmology. 

Dr. Khodabakhs, with offices in Beverly Hills and Torrance, has performed more than 40,000 eye surgical procedures and specializes in small incision cataract, glaucoma, and refractive surgery. He has also preformed live surgery and lectured in multiple countries around the world while becoming one of the most sought-after key opinion leaders in the United States and is a consultant to all major ophthalmic companies. 

He has numerous publications in major ophthalmic journals including Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Cornea. He is presently working on a book that deals with the complications of cataract surgery.

Dennis Leung, OD

For more than 25 years, Dr. Dennis Leung has been providing superior eye care services to the people in Los Angles county especially in the San Gabriel Valley region. His professional mission is to prevent myopia and slow down the progression of myopia in children. Dr. Leung is a world renowned expert in myopia control and Ortho-K. 

A respected educator, Dr. Leung has lectured on the latest clinical advancement in refractive laser surgeries, hard to fit contact lenses, and specialty contact lens design as well as eye diseases related to dry eye syndromes and eye infections. He has been an investigator for several studies including a FDA study of a Correct Tech Orthokeratology Lenses, Renu Contact Lens Solution Study sponsored by Bausch & Lomb, and Soflens 66: Asian Eye Study sponsored by Bausch & Lomb. 

Dr. Leung graduated in 1984 from the New England College of Optometry, Boston, Massachusetts. He completed Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease Training and passed the National Board of Examiners, T.M.O.D. examination in 1996. The following year he completed Ophthalmological Preceptorship Training. Dr. Leung is a current board member of the Orthokeratology Academy of America and Myopia Control, and is affiliated with the California Optometric Association and American Optometric Association. 

Dr. Leung is fluent in English, Chinese (Cantonese & Mandarin) and Spanish. Dr. Leung's other interests include playing piano and guitar. He is also an avid soccer player and fan.

Jennifer Loh, MD

Loh Ophthalmology Associates  /  Miami, FL

Jennifer Loh, MD is a board -certified ophthalmologist practicing in Miami, Florida with a focus on cataract-refractive surgery and dry eye disease.   

She is founder and medical director of her practice, Loh Ophthalmology Associates, which she started in 2016. Dr. Loh also spends her time as a clinical and surgical attending for the Larkin Hospital Ophthalmology Residency program.

Currently, she has been active in speaking at national ophthalmology meetings and in publishing articles in ophthalmology trade journals. She also served as the 2019 president of Cedars-Aspens, an anterior segment group consisting of  some of the country’s top key opinion leaders and is a member of both AECOS and the Refractive Surgery Alliance.

Dr. Loh has recently been honored with the 2018 Rising Star Award from OWL (Ophthalmic World Leaders), The Ophthalmologist Power List Rising Star Award in 2017, and the Alcon Outstanding Female Leader Award in 2016. On a local level, Dr. Loh was recently named as a Top Doctor In (and near) Coral Gables by Castle-Connelly.

Dr. Loh graduated summa cum laude from Butler University and completed both her medical school training and residency at Indiana University School of Medicine. As a medical student, she was inducted into the IU chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, which focuses on identifying students and physicians who exemplify compassionate care. Dr. Loh was also fortunate to serve as chief resident for both her intern year program and ophthalmology residency.

In her spare time, Dr. Loh enjoys skiing and traveling the world with her husband and 3 year old son.

Ranjan Malhotra, MD, FACS

Ophthalmology Associates  /  St. Louis, MO

Dr. Ranjan Malhotra graduated with honors from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), where he completed their accelerated six-year Bachelor’s/Medical Degree Program in 1995. The Missouri native then completed his internship at St. John’s Mercy Hospital in St. Louis and his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center before deciding to further specialize in cornea/external disease and refractive surgery. He earned a fellowship position at the Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City and is board-certified in ophthalmology.

Dr. Malhotra returned to his hometown of St. Louis in 2000, when he joined Ophthalmology Associates in a partnership with Dr. Gregg Berdy. Dr. Malhotra is also the primary investigator for many FDA trials for medications used in the treatment of glaucoma, dry eye, conjunctivitis, allergy and bacterial/viral infections. Because of his front-line experience with medication development, he is invited to give continuing education lectures to his peers across the country and at many professional meetings.

In addition to his primary practice, Dr. Malhotra is involved in the education of residents at Washington University and at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in St. Louis. He has satellite offices in Sullivan and St. Peter’s, Mo., and has served as a board member for the Missouri Society of Eye Physicians and for the St. Louis Chapter of the Indian Medical Council/ American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.

Dr. Malhotra, his parents, wife, and brother and sister-in-law established the Malhotra Scholarship for Academic Excellence, the largest endowed scholarship UMKC has received to date. Dr. Malhotra and his wife were also significant contributors to establishing a permanent building for the Bal-Vihar Center for Indian Cultural Education in St. Louis.

Dr. Malhotra, who enjoys exercising, golf and the study of wine, is married to high school sweetheart Dr. Kristen Malhotra, a Ph.D., in Neuropsychology from Washington University, who has chosen to remain at home to raise their three children.

Paul Mann, MD

Mann Eye Institute  /  Houston, TX

Dr. Paul Mann, who specializes in refractive surgery, has been performing blade-free LASIK since 2002, logging more than 40,000 refractive procedures. Dr. Mann also specializes in cataract surgery with femtosecond lasers and presbyopia correcting intraocular lens implants. In addition, he particularly enjoys implanting phakic IOLs to correct extreme nearsightedness in patients who do not qualify for LASIK, as well as helping patients with keratoconus with corneal collagen crosslinking treatments to provide corneal stability.

Dr. Mann received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, his MB.A. from Rice University while attending medical school at University of Texas Medical School in Houston, and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society while in medical school. He then completed his internship and residency training at the John A. Moran Eye Center of the University of Utah. Sharing his father’s passion for restoring sight, he served as Clinical Fellow of Refractive and Corneal Surgery at the Pepose Vision Institute in Missouri before coming home to Houston and joining his father in practice in 2004. 

A Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Mann is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He currently serves as the Medical Director of Mann Eye Institute, where he spearheads the Institute’s participation in Christian Community Service Center’s vision screening programs for disadvantaged children. He is past president of the Houston Ophthalmological Society and previously served as the president of Benevolent Missions International, a Houston area non-profit organization that provides eye care to the indigent in Belize and Fiji.

Dr. Mann lives in Houston with his wife and two children. He is an avid sports fan who enjoys fly fishing and hunting.

Robert Melendez, MD, MBA

Juliette Eye Institute  /  Albuquerque, NM

Dr. Robert Melendez is CEO/Founder of the Juliette Eye Institute and a Clinical Professor at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in the Department of Ophthalmology. He is passionate about mentoring and educating others about ophthalmology and the business of ophthalmology. Melendez started his own magazine called Ophthalmology Business Minute and a national meeting called The Outliers Ophthalmology Meeting designed to help refractive surgery practices enhance the patient experience with premium services and products. He is also a veteran where he served in the United States Air Force and was a flight surgeon. Melendez separated from the military in 2020 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He also started The Juliette RP Vision Foundation to help find a cure for Retinitis Pigmentosa. He is passionate about improving surgical outcomes and has started the The Juliette Eye Institute Research Center. Dr. Melendez is also a Local ABC news medical correspondent.

Dana Ondrias, OD

Dr. Dana Ondrias is a Texas-licensed optometrist and the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mann Eye Institute. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience in primary eye care and laser vision correction obtained during her professional career.

Dr. Ondrias became interested in eye care while working in a prestigious optometry practice during high school. She attended Texas Tech University, and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science at the University of Houston. She attended University of Houston School of Optometry and earned a Doctor of Optometry in 1996. Dr. Ondrias has worked and trained with some of North America’s premier refractive surgeons. She has been a Regional Executive and Clinical Director for TLC Laser Vision Centers. During her tenure there, she focused on patient management of pre and post operative surgical care as well as development of policies and procedures to operationally manage laser facilities.

Dr. Ondrias has been with Mann Eye Institute for the past 15 years, where she is responsible for the operations of its 19 locations, which include Lasik facilities, ambulatory surgery centers, ophthalmic clinics and optical facilities.

Dr. Ondrias frequently performs national lectures on the varied technological and clinical aspects of eye care as well as practice management. She has served on a variety of local and national committees tasked with building better relations between optometrists and ophthalmologists as well as the development of improved clinical strategies in ophthalmic practices. She has served as an investigator for a number of clinical trials, including custom LASIK treatments.

Daniel Pluznik, MD

Dr. Daniel Pluznik is a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in premium cataract surgery.  He is the managing partner at Eye Physicians of Washington in Washington D.C.

Dr. Pluznik grew up in the Washington D.C. area.  After graduating from the University of Maryland with honors, he attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he was a member of the AOA honor society, graduating in 1995.  During college and medical school, he was involved in research at the National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He completed an ophthalmology residency at the Washington Hospital Center in D.C. in 1999.

After residency, Dr. Pluznik joined one of the oldest and most respected practices in Washington, D.C. and has developed a reputation for premium cataract surgery utilizing the latest technology lenses and lasers.  In addition, Dr. Pluznik serves as a clinical instructor at the Washington Hospital Center/Georgetown University department of Ophthalmology, where he trains residents in cataract surgery.

He was one of the first to implant diffractive multifocal lenses in the Washington area in 2005 and was among the first in the country to perform femto laser assisted cataract surgery in 2011.  In addition to extensive experience with premium cataract surgery he also performs glaucoma surgery and cosmetic and functional eyelid surgery, as well as comprehensive medical care of the eye. He has been named Washingtonian Magazine “Top Docs” yearly, and was featured in the Washington Post in September of 2012.

Brianna Rhue, OD, FAAO

Dr. Brianna Rhue grew up in Colorado Springs, did her undergraduate studies at University of Arizona, graduated with her optometry degree from south Florida’s Nova Southeastern University in 2009 and completed her residency at The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami.  She then joined a private practice in Fort Lauderdale and became a part owner in 2015. 

Dr. Rhue is a high myope herself and so is her husband. Her passion for myopia management and control grew when her son, Dalton, was born three years ago. Her goal is to assure doctors are educated about myopia management and control and that young kids are being screened and treated earlier to prevent them from needing thicker and thicker glasses over time.

Dr. Steven R. Shachar Tauber, MD
